At Surrey, our Department of Mathematics is home to a highly supportive learning environment and internationally-leading research. World-class research is at the heart of everything we do, and our students are given opportunities to get involved in research through summer projects and integrated placements in industry.

Our mathematics courses offer vital insight into mathematical applications crucial to social, industrial and technological development. But don’t just take our word for it. Learn what a typical week in the life of a first-year mathematics student is like from an actual Surrey student.

Studying mathematics at Surrey will take you on a fascinating journey, preparing you for work, further study or research. Our students gain invaluable experience in the industry as part of our Professional Training placement programme. Such as Rory who spent his placement year at IBM and was given the opportunity to work at Wimbledon, the biggest tennis tournament in the world.

For many students, placements help secure work after graduation. For example Keryn, who completed her placement at Lloyds Banking Group, was recommended for their Graduate Leadership Risk Programme, and Bethany, who did a placement at Iris Concise, was offered a senior analyst role after she graduated.

Our graduates are highly numerate and computer literate, with advanced analytical skills. They’re in great demand in a wide range of industries and go on to do incredible things, such as James Godwin and Hannah Williams, who work at KPMG and Arcadis respectively.
