Hospitality and tourism management

Here at the University of Surrey we’re proud to be one of the best places in the world to study or research hospitality and tourism. We are ranked 2nd in the Complete University Guide 2019, top five in the Guardian University Guide 2019, top five in the QS World University Rankings 2018, top five in the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2018 and top ten in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019. But what is it that makes us a global force in this exciting area of study?

Our School of Hospitality and Tourism Management is among the best in the world because our courses have a fresh and dynamic outlook, our staff are world-leading experts in their fields, and our research is helping to shape the industry.

Our research is focussed into three research groups: Sustainability and wellbeing in the visitor economy, Competitiveness in the visitor economy and The digital visitor economy. Our research is investigating the link between smartphone usage and risk reduction for backpackers, educating the European Parliament on the future of sustainable tourism, exploring how autonomous vehicles could shape the future of urban tourism, monitoring sustainable tourism through the European Tourism Indicator System, and discovering just how unprepared the UK is for climate change.

Our renowned Professional Training placement programme and our study abroad opportunities allow our students to fully experience the hospitality and tourism industry as part of their degree. We have a wide range of placement partners. Alice Kelly did her placement at Planet Hollywood in Orlando, Florida; Daniela Tarniceru worked at the Park Plaza hotel in London; and Bevan Hardcastle spent a year at the Hilton Hotel in Kensington Olympia, London.
