Civil and environmental engineering

At Surrey we have over 50 years’ experience in offering civil engineering degrees and provide an excellent balance of academic studies, practical skills and professional experience. It’s easy to see why students find so many reasons to study or research here.

In our Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering we pride ourselves on the excellent standard of our teaching and research. We also have a unique Surrey/ICE scholarship scheme run with Institution of Civil Engineers and industry partners, which was created to help launch students into their dream careers.

So many exciting things happen at Surrey in the world of civil and environmental engineering, such as our legendary ScraphEEp challenge and our exciting Design, Assemble and Dismantle (DAD) challenge, where students put their skills and knowledge to the test.

Our students are at the heart of our success and inspire us every day. They’ve been published in leading papers, appointed on the Board and Student Panel of the Office for Students, won a Women in Property award, and more.

Our renowned Professional Training Placement programme allows our students to get a real taste of working in their chosen industry. Such as Jessica Hyland who worked at EvolveUK and Elizabeth Davis who worked at Hewson Consulting Engineers.

Taught by research-active academics in collaboration with industry professionals, our graduates are highly employable. We’re proud to say that 90% of our graduates are in a professional or managerial job six months after graduating. Listen to two Surrey alumni talk about how Surrey kick-started their careers, learn how the Infrastructure Managing Director at Costain got his start at Surrey, and discover the top careers civil engineering students pursue after graduation.
