I was first attracted to civil engineering as a subject because of how diverse and challenging it is. I knew the course would teach me a vast array of knowledge that I could transfer to a career after graduation.
There were several reasons why I decided to choose the University of Surrey. After visiting Surrey at an open day, it just felt right moreover! I had always been interested in doing professional training, so the fact that Surrey offer a placement year was a real attraction.
I am now a site engineer working for Laing O’Rourke. My work involves creating a variety of temporary works designs for a range of projects, including the Thames Tideway project and Google’s new headquarters. The most rewarding thing about my job is the sense of pride I feel knowing that I am making a real contribution to society through my work.
