Surrey stood out to me because it offered a placement and training year, which most universities don’t. I felt that when I came out of my degree, the addition of a placement year would put me head and shoulders above the competition when it came to finding a job, and I was right.
Surrey’s Politics Department focuses on research-led teaching. You are taught by the top academics in the field with the help of cutting-edge research. This meant that I came away with a much better practical understanding of politics and power structures, and much better equipped for a political career.
I’m a Parliamentary Capability Officer at the Cabinet Office. My job is to help civil servants better understand Parliament, how it affects their work in Government and how they can work with it effectively. I really love what I do. Without Surrey and my placement year, I certainly wouldn’t be working at the heart of Government today.
